Known to the Chinese as the ‘firefox’. While its Chinese-endemic counterpart, the Giant Panda Ailuropoda melanoleuca, eats both bamboo leaves and stems the Red Panda eats only the leaves of the bamboo as well as wild cherries (Sorbus aucuparia, in the Fall season), roots, berries, acorns, insects, eggs and young birds.
Red Pandas primarily live between altitudes of 2100 and 4400 meters, endemic to the eastern Himalayas, but appear to live mostly on the southern and eastern slopes of the mountains they inhabit.
